Most executives know the importance of having, and testing, what they refer to as a disaster recovery plan. If you are serious about protecting your organization from a disaster, and you may owe it to yourself, your family, and your team members, know that PBS released a NOVA video that highlights a real danger we all face. The show is less than an hour long, is available online from PBS, and it is called CyberWar Threat: As internet connections multiply so do points of attack and risks to national security.

Something else to be aware of is that Ted Koppel, former anchor for Nightline, released his book about the vulnerability of the country’s power grid, entitled Lights Out: A Cyberattack, A Nation Unprepared, Surviving the Aftermath. According to him, we are woefully unprepared.

Additionally, the topic of terrorists taking out the power grid is becoming a major focus point at cyber-security conferences.

Preparing your company for an extended power failure is just as important as being prepared for floods, hurricanes, or any other disasters you address as part of your disaster recovery plan.

Remember how we never imagined September 11th? Until it happened?

Educate yourself. You owe it to your family and company to prepare for Disaster Recovery from an event that some prominent people feel is no longer a possibility, but a likelihood. Could they be right?

Executives and owners need to know how much to spend on their DRP disaster recovery plans. Shortcut the process like this:

Gather managers from each department. Determine what impact a disruption would cause to your organization. Instead of exact figures, just use terms like hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands, millions, etc. of dollars.

Lost income is almost always a factor, usually because of the inability to produce and deliver your products and services. Will that cost you hundreds or millions of dollars if you are down “x” number of days, hours, or minutes?

Additionally, consider damage to your organization’s reputation.

Will you lose customers if you are unable to provide products and services in a timely manner?

How much will you spend on payroll even when workers are unable to produce?

Keep in mind insurance limitations.

There are so many ways to incur expenses when you are down. Use this quick method to get an idea of how much money you would lose. That will help you determine how much to invest in your disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
