Without getting complicated, OneLogin, Okta, Centrify, Microsoft, RSA SecureID Access, SalesForce App Cloud, and even more basic password managers store user identities, and login information. Using these services means that users only need to remember one password and all of their other logins are handled for them.

The most important thing about the OneLogin breach: It affects you and everyone else, not just the 2000 customers of OneLogin.

If you store information in the cloud, including information your customers entrust to you, and if your cloud provider uses OneLogin internally, then your sensitive information could possibly be accessible as well. Cloud based service providers you use every day might use identity management.

This is another example of how someone else’s breach can hurt you, including exposing your customers’ sensitive information.

The big question is: How long have attackers had access? Thank goodness OneLogin at least identified that they’d been breached. Are any other identity management firms breached and don’t yet realize it? What are attackers accessing around the world using stolen passwords?

Please forward this to anyone you know who may not realize that these single points of failure, holding login information for many services that even your service providers may use internally, are very attractive targets for attackers. One successful attack results in a goldmine of information, including yours.

Some organizations still use Windows XP on some machines, and have plans to upgrade to Windows 7. This is a very bad idea, and here is why…

Is your IT department busy? Of course they are.

Do you want your IT professionals to focus on the most important tasks? Of course you do.

And the IT Engineers at Microsoft are swamped too. They have to choose where they will devote their best talents, their money, and their resources – and Microsoft is funneling their efforts into Windows 8.1. Not Windows 7.

Do you want to be a step ahead of your competition? You have to take risks. And guess what, this isn’t a real risk – it is a perceived risk.

Let your competitors wimp out. Now is your chance to move ahead! Start testing Windows 8.1 today.

If you choose to upgrade to Windows 7, and not Windows 8.1, you are making a real mistake. Stay tuned for more next week. We’ll handle the objections then.

Driving my 6 year old son to school the day after Halloween, he told me that some kids in the class got into trouble because they used blue and pink crayons to color a picture of a pumpkin. The teacher made those kids redo their pictures. My son was proud because he “colored it right the first time!” How dare that teacher. Since then, and for the rest of his life, I’m going to urge him to be different. Most successful people are. His only restriction is to be nice to others. As long as he isn’t hurting anyone, it is essential for him to “get out of the box!”

My intent is to stir up some anxiety and influence you to “get out of the box!”

What about all those great Apple Apps? Microsoft is still paying developers, reportedly $100,000 and more, to develop apps. How long will it take Microsoft to “catch up”?

You may be pleasantly surprised with the selection of apps that are already available for the Surface Pro.

Do you like the Kindle and ESPN app for the iPhone? They work great on the Surface too. Of course the Kindle reader works. Visit http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/apps to choose “Search for Apps.”

Smoke and Mirrors: When we look at Windows 8 on a Surface Pro (not Surface RT), in the “tiled” interface, it has icons like the iPad has icons. It is a “tease” that you can operate the Surface Pro like you operate an iPad. It is true that the tiled interface is similar to the icons on an iPad, sort of.

One of the best tiles on the Windows 8 tiled screen is the tile named “Desktop” that takes you to something the iPad will never have: Windows, with an interface almost exactly like Windows 7.

Practically any Windows program runs on the Surface Pro. That’s a huge boost in your choice of apps.

Applications that run via web site interfaces – commonly called Web Applications – run fine as well.

Remember, Apple has had time to polish iOS, Microsoft is still polishing.

I still encounter many senior level executives that are determined to stay away from Windows 8 as long as possible. It is usually because they don’t know: When you switch to Windows 8, there is no learning curve. Make the move. Windows 8 is faster, more reliable, and more secure.

Yes, the advertisements for Windows 8 devices show the interface with all the square and rectangular tiles that are full of moving pictures. Someday maybe you’ll like that interface. But, for now, just tap the tile named “desktop.”

Ta-da! You are in familiar territory! It looks, feels, tastes and smells like Windows 7.

All of your existing software runs. Microsoft Office, Chrome, Firefox, your ERP, Adobe, PowerPoint, Mindjet, Carbonite, and even that program the guy named Joe wrote for you four years ago. Everything! And it seems like you are in Windows 7. Your IT professional can perform any tweaks you want.

You already know how to use Windows 8. It is faster, better, and more secure. What are you waiting for?

Busy executives need a lightweight laptop and tablet and the Lenovo Yoga computer is the solution. Want to synchronize your programs and data between your laptop and your tablet? That’s easy to do when your laptop is your tablet!

I do not resell the Yoga and am in no way affiliated with Lenovo nor am I paid in any way by them. The Yoga has nothing to do with being able to contort your body in ways that most of us can only dream of.

The Lenovo Yoga (Google it) is on hinges so you can use the device in a “laptop” configuration. When you want to, just fold the Yoga flat and it becomes a tablet. The 11″ model feels more like a tablet when folded. I’m using the 13″ and it isn’t as small or lightweight as my iPad, but there are no “synchronization” or “compatibility” issues to deal with since Apple can be “out of the picture” if you want.

There is no “removable keyboard” to have to keep up with like with other new convertible computers. The keyboard is one of the best ones you will find on a small computer. The engineers at Lenovo made it a priority to ensure the keys on the keyboard have more “travel” up and down than other small keyboards.

It is of course a “touch screen” to make interacting very easy. Yes, it is Windows 8, and keep in mind that Windows (basically) has Windows 7 built in for all of your existing programs to run too.

The machine boots amazingly fast. I thought I’d dislike the “orange” color, but it is a nice “burnt orange” color that almost feels rubbery when you hold it.

The list goes on… To put it simply, the Yoga combined with Windows 8 is the best computing experience I’ve ever had—so far…

What about the new Microsoft Surface Pro? For me, I need an excellent keyboard, and the Surface isn’t going to work—at least not for a full use machine. Would I carry one as a separate tablet? Maybe. Stay tuned…

C-level Executives, presidents, and owners, Windows 8 may change the way your organization works. Do you need new computers? Will your existing programs still work? You want to know if Windows 8 is “worth it.”

1. The learning curve inside of your organization will be shorter since you can still use your Windows 7 applications. Windows 7 runs on top of Windows 8 in what Microsoft calls the “Desktop.”

2. Windows 8 can increase the productivity of your workforce by providing an interface that looks and feels more like Android and Apple iPhone/iPad experiences. Your workers can drag work in the way they’ve become accustomed to.

3. Everything is “right there” on each device so that your workers can be productive on their computers, tablets, phones, etc. Documents and settings automatically synchronize to every device.

And two more bonus tips:

4. As you buy new hardware at your organization, strongly consider having a touch-screen computer or tablet to use Windows 8. Yes, the mouse will work, but the touch screen is much better. Imagine using an iPad, iPhone, or Android device using a mouse and no touch-screen.

5. If you want your IT professional to show you how this works, tell them:

To download and install an evaluation of Windows 8 go here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-8.aspx

To download and try Microsoft Office 2013 go here:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/en
